In order to create a new civic space and focal point for the Irish market town of Gorey, we chose to interpret the brief as a series of complementary buildings gathered around a new town square. The scale and massing of buildings relates to the existing urban grain and acknowledges the setting of the nearby Pugin designed St Michael’s Church. The square creates a new route between the main street and shopping centre to ensure life and vibrancy throughout the day. This is further reinforced by the foyer for each building set onto the square and internally lit at night to illuminate the square. The facilities provided include new Council Offices, Public Library, District Court Facilities, Mental Health Day Hospital, Vocational Education College, and apartments. The rigorous attention to detail and specification extends from the external envelope and landscaping to the interior design, fitted furniture and finishes.
