The Mater Hospital dates from the late 1800s and was built in the Gothic Revival style. Surrounded by the new hospital buildings as it developed, the refurbished chapel is considered by many to be a ‘hidden gem’ within the hospital campus, causing surprise and delight to those who enter it from the adjoining hospital corridor. The brief was to create a multi–faith space whilst giving new life to the existing architecture and features. The redecoration was inspired by the rich colours of the stained glass windows to dramatic effect, a new light scheme was integrated, as well as the addition of new stencilling and wall panelling.
